Pre-cooling and storage are different duties
Fruit and Vegetable Cold Storage
Fruit and vegetable storage depends on variety, maturity, packing, incoming condition, airflow, humidity and turnover. Pre-cooling should be planned as its own stage, not assumed by a storage-room volume.

01
Use product-specific inputs
Different fruit and vegetable varieties can require different storage and handling conditions. Maturity, harvest condition, packaging, expected holding period, room loading pattern and airflow all influence the project discussion. This page does not prescribe a universal condition or product shelf-life outcome.
A valuable brief names the product varieties, incoming state, expected daily intake, required storage pattern and any quality or humidity concerns that the operator already knows. Unknown values should be identified for technical review rather than filled with broad assumptions.
02
Do not merge pre-cooling with storage
Pre-cooling removes product heat after harvest or receipt; storage maintains an agreed room condition after product has reached its target state. The peak duty, operating timing and equipment interfaces can be very different. A project that treats both stages as one room may hide important load and workflow questions.
Controlled-atmosphere storage is also a distinct scope. It should only be presented where the actual available capability, product requirements and responsibility boundary have been confirmed.
03
Consider the room operation
Door openings, pallet layout, air distribution, maintenance access, defrosting, moisture management and dispatch handling all influence how a produce room performs. Discussing these operational conditions early can prevent a proposal from focusing only on a nominal room size.
| Input | Question | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Variety and maturity | Which products are stored and in what condition? | Conditions should not be generalized across products. |
| Pre-cooling | Is product cooled before storage, and at what rate? | Defines a separate process load. |
| Humidity/airflow | What quality concerns and handling pattern apply? | Affects terminal and control discussion. |
| Packing and layout | How are pallets, cartons or crates arranged? | Influences room operation and airflow. |
| Turnover | How long and how often is product held? | Shapes door activity and operating profile. |
Questions to discuss
Frequently asked questions
Can this page promise a storage life?
No. Product quality and storage life depend on the actual variety, condition, handling and food-safety controls. This guide explains project questions, not product guarantees.
Is controlled atmosphere included?
It is not assumed. It is a separate capability and scope that needs confirmation before it is offered.
